The Curious Case of Buying AI You Already Own (and Why the Safer One Is Already There)

Artificial Intelligence has become the corporate equivalent of kale smoothies: everyone feels they should have one, not everyone knows why, and many are quietly consuming duplicates. Nowhere is this more evident than in the growing number of organisations enthusiastically purchasing the entire Microsoft Copilot product for “ChatGPT facilities,” despite already having access to many of those capabilities through Microsoft 365 Business Premium.

If this feels familiar, it might be time to put on the special sunglasses from John Carpenter’s They Live (1988) and look beneath the marketing billboards.

PUT ON THE GLASSES

In They Live, the protagonist discovers that the world is plastered with hidden commands: OBEY, CONSUME, STAY ASLEEP. Today’s IT departments don’t need alien overlords—just a slick product page, a board-level question about AI, and a vague fear of “falling behind.”

The phrase “We need Copilot” has become a kind of corporate hypnosis. Rarely does it come with a follow-up question such as:
Which Copilot? For what? And do we already have most of this?

Microsoft hasn’t helped by naming roughly half its AI strategy “Copilot.” There’s Copilot for Microsoft 365, Copilot Pro, Copilot Studio, Copilot in Edge, Copilot in Windows, and standalone ChatGPT-style experiences. The result? Decision-makers squint at the pricing page, see “AI,” and reflexively approve the purchase.

THE ALIEN TRUTH ABOUT MICROSOFT 365 BUSINESS PREMIUM

Here’s the part revealed when the glasses go on:

Most Microsoft 365 Business Premium tenants already have access to AI-powered features that cover the majority of everyday “ChatGPT-like” use cases, including:

  • AI-assisted drafting, rewriting, and summarisation in Word and Outlook

  • Meeting summaries and action extraction in Teams

  • Research and summarisation via Copilot-enabled Edge and Bing

  • Intelligent automation and suggestions through Power Platform

  • AI-driven security insights across Defender, Entra, and Purview

For many businesses, this already solves the real problem they’re trying to address:

“I want staff to write faster, understand meetings they missed, and stop pasting sensitive data into random tools.”

Which brings us to the part that really matters.

THIS ONE IS WEARING A SUIT AND WORKS FOR YOU

Using Microsoft Copilot within your Microsoft 365 tenancy isn’t just more convenient — it’s fundamentally safer than staff using public ChatGPT tools on the side.

When employees use Copilot inside M365:

1. Your data stays inside your tenant
Prompts and responses are processed within Microsoft’s commercial data boundary. They are not used to train public models, and they inherit your organisation’s data residency and compliance controls.

2. Existing permissions still apply
Copilot can only see what the user is already allowed to see. If they don’t have access to a document, mailbox, or SharePoint site, Copilot doesn’t magically gain it. ChatGPT, by contrast, has no concept of your internal permission model.

3. Compliance, audit, and eDiscovery still work
Copilot interactions are governed by the same compliance framework as the rest of Microsoft 365. This matters the first time legal, HR, or security asks, “Who generated this content, and from what data?”

4. No shadow IT, no data leakage roulette
Public AI tools rely entirely on user judgment. One copy-paste too many and you’ve just uploaded a client contract, financial data, or internal strategy into a system you don’t control. Copilot reduces this risk by living where the data already is.

5. Security teams can actually sleep at night
Defender, Purview, Conditional Access, and DLP policies still apply. There’s logging, governance, and the ability to say “no” when needed. With external tools, security teams don’t even get a seat in the fight scene.

In They Live terms, Microsoft Copilot is the one character who has an employee badge and follows building access rules. ChatGPT is the guy in the alley saying, “Trust me, it’s fine.”

CONSUME… LICENCES

This is where the alien message gets louder.

The billboard doesn’t say “Use Copilot safely inside your existing tenancy.”
It says: “BUY EVERYTHING. NOW.”

What often follows:

  • Copilot licences assigned en masse

  • Minimal user education

  • No prompt standards

  • No data governance review

  • Surprise when results are inconsistent

Three months later, productivity hasn’t doubled, and finance is staring at an AI bill that looks suspiciously like it was bought out of panic.

THE SHORTFALL ISN’T TECHNOLOGY — IT’S DISCIPLINE

The real mistake isn’t choosing Copilot over ChatGPT. That’s often the right choice.

The mistake is skipping the fundamentals:

  1. Audit what Microsoft 365 already provides

  2. Lock down and communicate safe AI usage

  3. Train users how to prompt and validate output

  4. Upgrade to advanced Copilot features only where ROI is clear

Copilot for Microsoft 365 is genuinely powerful when you need deep integration across Teams chats, calendars, emails, and organisational knowledge. But not everyone needs it on day one.

Buying Copilot for everyone “just in case” is the AI equivalent of issuing night-vision goggles to staff who never leave the office.

STAY ASLEEP OR WAKE UP

In They Live, waking up is uncomfortable. People fight it. Literally. There’s a six-minute alleyway brawl over putting on the glasses.

In organisations, the fight sounds like:

  • “But ChatGPT is what people know.”

  • “Microsoft marketing made it sound essential.”

  • “The board asked if we’re using AI.”

None of these are business requirements.

A more awake approach is less glamorous but far more effective:

“Let’s use the AI that’s already secured, governed, and paid for — then expand deliberately.”

Ironically, organisations that do this tend to adopt Copilot better, not slower. Users understand the boundaries, trust the tool, and stop using risky alternatives.

THE REAL MESSAGE

So what does the billboard actually say?

Not NO COPILOT.
Not even NO CHATGPT.

Just: USE THE ONE THAT WON’T GET YOU FIRED.

Microsoft 365 Business Premium already gives many organisations a safer AI foundation than they realise. Before buying the mothership, before panicking about AI maturity, before letting staff paste confidential data into the void — put on the glasses.

Because the most dangerous command isn’t OBEY.

It’s UPGRADE WITHOUT THINKING.
