I recently had the pleasure of providing event videography for the Zokit Business Networking event at the iconic Coal Exchange Hotel in Cardiff Bay. This was a fantastic evening of connection, collaboration, and conversation — all set within one of South Wales’ most visually striking venues.

From a filming perspective, the Coal Exchange Hotel is an exceptional location. Its blend of historic character and modern luxury makes it ideal for capturing professional, engaging video content that feels both authentic and polished.

A Stunning Venue for Filming Events in Cardiff

The Coal Exchange Hotel is a dream venue for business event videography. The architecture, textures, and carefully restored details provide rich visual backdrops, while the natural flow of the space allows for discreet filming without interrupting the event itself.

The Coal Exchange: From Global Powerhouse to Iconic Hotel

Built between 1884 and 1888 in Mount Stuart Square and designed by architects Edwin Seward and J. P. Jones, the Coal Exchange Hotel is a Grade II* listed Renaissance-style landmark that once stood at the very centre of the global coal trade. During the height of the Welsh coal boom, up to 200 coal owners, shipowners, and trading agents gathered daily on its trading floor, culminating in a historic moment in 1904 when the world’s first £1,000,000 business deal was signed within its walls.

Following the First World War, economic decline saw coal prices fall sharply, leading to the eventual closure of the exchange as a trading floor in 1958 and the end of Cardiff’s coal exports by 1964. The building later experienced a creative reinvention during the 1970s and 1980s as a club, concert venue, and event space, before undergoing a major restoration in 2016 by Signature Living. Today, it operates as the Coal Exchange Hotel, offering 75 individually designed boutique rooms and a spectacular Grand Hall that retains much of its original wood‑panelled character and historic detail — making it a visually striking and atmospheric setting for modern events and filming.
